CV Tips

Your CV is an essential – it is what is going to ‘sell’ you to potential employers to make it to that all-important interview stage.

There are vital elements that you need to include on your CV. They are:

  • Contact Details – Phone Numbers, Address, Email Address
  • Personal Information – Visa Status, Availability, Interests (optional)
  • Summary – A short paragraph or bullet points summarising your experience, qualifications, and industry experience. This can also include your career objective.
  • Education – Dates, Qualification, and Institution for any university, industry, or school certifications.
  • Skills/Technical Skills – in bullet point or table format.
  • Work History
    • Dates of employment, including month and year
    • Company name
    • Position title
    • Company information- include a short summary for each company worked at. Include industry, what they do, size (if relevant). This can usually be found on the company website.
    • Responsibilities
    • Projects (if relevant)
    • Achievements
  • Training – Dates, Course, and Institution
  • Referees

Tips:

  • Use a formal email address. For example firstname.lastname@whatever.com. Avoid using inappropriate or funny email addresses, and ensure you can check your email no matter what country you are in. We recommend Gmail or Hotmail.
  • Your CV should be between 2-5 pages long. Avoid writing a CV over 10 pages.
Reduce non-relevant work history to include dates, company, position title and possibly one sentence for responsibilities.
  • Use a font that is easy to read – we recommend Arial 10pt or 11pt.
  • Write your CV in third person. Avoid the use of ‘I’ or ‘me’.
  • Include a phone number of your destination if possible.
